Yet another pearl of wisdom from Seth Godin
From now on, please make it a point to read Seth's blog everyday. I am discovering what a blog reader is, and how to subscribe to feeds from my favorite blogs. I will demo the usage of Blog reader (among other things) to RunWalkIndia team when I am in Bangalore in April.
Please note : I have included a link to Seth Godin's blog in the list of external web-site links in this blog. Previously I had intended it to have only running and fitness related links. Seth's Blog will be an exception.
Today's blog post about Managing urgencies is relevant for our team as it emphasizes the importance of having long term goals aligned with the vision, and work with short term goals to support and achieve the long term goals. To quote from the blog:
I guess the trick is to make the long term items even more urgent than today's emergencies. Break them into steps and give them deadlines. Measure your people on what they did today in support of where you need to be next month.I would say we are doing very well on the long term goal aspect; we need to align our short term activities - specifically around the April 13th 5K event in JP Park - in line with our long term goals. The daily conference call we are having since yesterday will go a long way in ensuring this alignment between long term vision and short term planning and activities.

Running routes all over the world
Following are some of the uses I can see from this web-site:
- Highlight any routes RunWalkIndia folks use by including it on this site.
- Connect with other running enthusiasts all over India - an invaluable resource in the preparation for a Kashmir to Kanyakumari relay run!
- Increase awareness among people about the running tracks and running enthusiasts in their area.

Pot of Gold indeed
I am using this category to identify all posts with details on the long term goals of RunWalkIndia initiative. The posts under this category will provide the details of the possible future RunWalkIndia will create and make happen and live into. These posts are meant to guide & inspire everyone involved with this effort over a long time to come.
Apart from the symbolic meaning, there is also a couple of physical pot-of-gold I hope to convey through this term.
The first real pot-of-gold is the prosperity it will bring to everyone involved in the effort. Whether the effort will turn into a non-profit or a for-profit business model, the firm should be able to sustain and provide for the livelihood of the employees of the firm. There are going to be quite a few people working full time with this company all over the country, and ensuring their happiness would be a very critical goal for the organization.
Happy Employees, Productive Company, Successful Business. The second real pot-of-gold is the improvement of India's position in the Global Sports Community. To increase the number and frequency of Indian nationals showing up on the Podiums of Olympics and other world sports events.
I am one of the many Indians who are ashamed of the virtual absence - and sometimes slim presence - of Indians on a list of winners in a Global Sports Event. Sure India has a few sporting Golds to be proud of - in Cricket, in Chess, and I can't think of any more examples. However, they are indeed very meager.
One key byproduct of the RunWalkIndia effort I would like to see happen in the next few decades is India moving up the Olympics Map - the world map depicting Average Olympic Medals won per Million inhabitants.
As an Indian, I am ashamed by the fact that India has a cumulative total of three medals in three Olympics between 1996 and 2004, but rather than not highlight this fact, I would do something about it - and that is what RunWalkIndia is all about.

A challenge to aspiring 5K race organizers
Find your personal best time for a 5K or a 10KMark the distance in any park or sports stadium. Run and/or jog and/or walk the entire distance. Use a sophisticated timer or an ordinary wrist watch to time yourself. You don't have to break the world record; you just have to complete. And in case you have any aspirations of breaking the world record, you will have to finish the 5K distance in less than 13:00 minutes.
My personal best 5K time is 32:30 minutes. I am trying to cut it below 30 minutes for a long time with not much success!
The Couch to 5K plan has a workable plan for those who have never formally run to prepare and successfully run the first 5K.
Current Guiding Principle
You are going to be running this business a long time. Spend an extra month to figure out what your business model feels like and save yourself some headaches later on.Accepting the wisdom of this statement, I have chosen to reduce my efforts and time investment in my main business venture - in the Trading & Risk Management Software Best Practices Space, most likely around Murex software - for now, till I can get a clear grasp of how I will make money in the business; not just survive, but thrive in the business once I start.
The same applies to the RunWalkIndia effort as well. If I am not convinced of the various aspects of the business model and its appreciation and acceptance among the folks involved in the effort, I am ready to pull the plug on the April 13th event.
I think it is better to have the first event when there is reasonable confidence and clarity about the business model.
Guy Kawasaki - in The Art of the Start video and book - provides very succinctly, if a bit crudely, the definition of the business model:
To [define a business model] you need to answer two questions:The business model discussions for RunWalkIndia is still going on in the privacy of email communications. Hoping that the discussion will come to a commonly agreeable decision by Friday 21st March evening IST. That should allow for kicking off the efforts towards the organization of the first event in full earnest.
- Who has your money in their pockets?
- How are you going to get it into your pocket?
If the agreement on the business model does not happen by this Friday evening, then it would be most likely that the first event will be postponed from the current date of Sunday 13th April 2008.
Facts & Details of our first Event VENUE - JP Park
http://bangalorebuzz.blogspot.com/2006/03/breathe-easy-jp-park-is-here.html
The expansive 85-acre Jayaprakash Narayan Bio-diversity Park was formally inaugurated on 19.03.2006 and made open to the public by the then Karnataka Chief Minister.
On the occasion, he said: "We have a Cubbon Park which has come down from the British, a Lalbagh that's come from Tipu Sultan. The JP Park, BMP's biggest park to date, must be made as good as Cubbon and Lalbagh."
The park is a breather for the entire city, particularly for those in Mathikere, Jalahalli and Yeshwantpur. The park boasts of two lakes which have already attracted migratory birds, a rock garden, Nakshatra vana (star groove), tennis court, jogging track, etc.
This is north-west Bangalore's answer to Cubbon Park and Lalbagh. Eighty-five acres of sylvan bio-diversity, green belts of landscaped gardens and a groove that has plants that subscribe to your sun sign.
The Jayaprakash Narayan Park (JP Park) that has come up at the junction of Jalahalli and Mathikere after decades of delay, has been fortuitously revamped to beget the title of BMP's largest park.
The park boasts of 20,000 varieties of plant species, 60,000 flowering plants and shrubs and 5,000 medicinal herbs.
There is a rock garden in the park modelled after the one in Almatti. A musical fountain and a Plant Nursery is also proposed inside the park.
The park has three grooves called Pavithra Vana, which will have mini grooves called Nakshatra vana, Rashi Vana and Navagraha Vana. Apparently, each star in the zodiac constellation has a particular plant/tree ascribed to it.
The Park has a 4.5-km jogging track, bamboo garden, palm garden, play area for kids and women's playground with dedicated shuttle and tennicoit courts.
There are also a few acres devoted to a football court, volleyball ground, kabaddi ground and a 1,000-seater amphitheatre. Main attractions in the park are the two water bodies of 15 and nine acres each.
The bigger lake has already attracted migratory birds like pond heron, coot hen, little cormorant, moore hen, pelicans etc. At present, the park is open to the public freely at present.

Five reasons to keep the first event very small and simple
Here are five reasons why the first event has to be very simple:
- There is no RunWalkIndia team or company. So far it is still a bunch of friends who are working together and volunteering their time to make the event happen. Everyone has a day job to handle and no one is working on this full-time.
- The people based in Bangalore working on the event organization don't have experience in organizing an event.
- The people based in Bangalore working on the event organization don't have experience in running in an event.
- The intended participants in the event also don't have any familiarity with this kind of event. It is something they will get to know and experience in person for the first time in the context of this race.
- You really want the fifth reason?!!
Advice from Seth Godin on how to spread an idea
Check out the following links on Seth Godin's blog - which I unearthed by searching for the term 'how ideas spread' on his blog:
Guy Kawasaki's The Art of the Start
For the team working on organizing the Apr 13th event:
Guy Kawasaki is one of the most inspirational figure I have come across in my efforts to learn about what it takes to be starting a business on my own. This video summarizes his thoughts and advices on starting anything - a business, a non-profit, a local social drive, etc. - to anyone who wants to make a difference in the world.
The AllTop webpage on Health will be a useful reference for us in making the RunWalkIndia initiative successful. AllTop is an aggregation site launched recently by Guy Kawasaki & his company.

How to get things done in a team
1. Delegate work to others
2. Trust in their ability to do a perfect job
3. Be accountable, and have everyone be accountable.
4. Spend as much time as possible together.
5. Be open to feedback from others, and act on the advice.
6. Know that all lists are incomplete and disposable, including this.
Find ways to make it fun. If it is not fun to do it, it is not worth doing it, and most likely will not get done.
Have fun!

Marathon is a bad word
Please make it a point to not mention Marathon in the context of this event. A marathon is 42 kilometres long.
A person could start a marathon in JP Park and most likely end up at the new airport in Devanahalli by the end of it!!
What we are aiming to organize here is a short distance race - as short as 5K or even shorter (depending on the length of the jogging path in JP Park, and how many rounds one can have the race setup for and still be able to manage the event properly). This is a reasonable distance for a total newbie to running.
All my Indian friends - even the well educated ones - have no knowledge of the various racing distances, and the effort, training plan and benefits of each of the race distances. They group together all races under the umbrella term 'MARATHON'!! Makes me want to bang my head against the wall!
This is not a Marathon event. This is a 5K!
Another pearl of wisdom from Seth Godin
Meaning of Persistence.
Seth is indeed God in this world for anyone thinking of starting anything!

SabseBolo : Free conference calling in India
Being able to speak with everyone involved in the efforts at the same time will help build better relationships among the team, and facilitates better communication. Of course, it would be better if everyone can physically be at one location and meet each other in person. That being an impossibility due to geographical limitations and personal commitments, being able to speak with everyone on phone would be a workable alternative!
The conference calls will provide for a way to monitor progress, follow up on advice being provided, address key issues and bottlenecks, and in that way ensure high probability of success of the running event on April 13th!
I have set-up a conference call for the RunWalkIndia team using SabseBolo service this Saturday at 9:00 PM IST. The conference call is scheduled for half an hour. Not sure if everyone can make it at this time, but this is not a big deal. Who ever can make it to the conference call can do so and get to speak with each other. The others can join in subsequent conference calls.
Please go over the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) section of the SabseBolo website to get to know about how the conference call works.
One important thing to note:
The conference call will be to a number in Mumbai, and hence it would incur STD rates for calls made from outside Mumbai. I have asked SabseBolo folks if it is possible to have a conference call number from Bangalore.
I have also asked them if they would be willing to sponsor the event on April 13th!
SabseBolo is a company started by Sabeer Bhatia - the founder of Hotmail!!!!!

Organization of the Event: Responsibilities break-down
- Spreading the word:
- Preparing the flier; assigning responsibility to volunteers to distribute the fliers; have the fliers posted in the local Gymnasiums, sports fields, etc.
- Managing the course set-up & marking the course:
- Identifying the possible type of race events that can be organized in JP Park, and setting the course for each of them. Measuring the distances and marking the courses for all the races.
- Creating registration form that includes the following:
- Name
- Contact information
- Age on Race day
- Race event they want to participate in
- Gender
- T-Shirt Size
- The registration form should also give information about the course, start time, and what they will expect - T-Shirt, food, drinks, prizes, etc.
- The registration fee details (I think there should be a registration fee for each event - that will ensure that the people who sign up will be serious about the participation. Lets discuss the pricing of the events through mails)
- In races I have participated in the US, there is usually a waiver that participants should sign that releases the organizers from any liability. Not sure if this is required in India (Should this be included as well?)
- Arranging for T-Shirts:
- Designing the T-Shirt with Logo of Runwalkindia & the logo of sponsors
- Arranging for getting the T-Shirts manufactured, and delivered before the event date.
- Arranging for Awards:
- Deciding on all the prizes to be given as part of the event. Each sub-event can have prizes by age-group and sex
- There might be some special prizes as well - like the youngest and oldest participants, people who inspired everyone with their participation against the odds, people who contributed to making the event popular and successful, etc.
- Arranging for all these awards.
- Arranging for food and water:
- Arranging for water is a must.
- Arranging for food items - such as biscuits, fruits, cakes, etc. optional and preferably based on sponsorship.
- Arranging for first-aid and medical staff?
- The medical staff and ambulance may have to be on stand-by just in case.
- Managing registration:
- Having the participants register for their preferred event by giving their details and paying the registration fee. The E-mail ID and the phone numbers on the Flier should be for those people who will be managing the race registration.
- Finding sponsors:
- Local stores, radio stations, Gymnasiums, companies as well as national / global corporations will be willing to pay for putting up their names and logos in the Flier, web-page, T-shirts, advertisement banners at the event, etc.
- Finding volunteers:
- The organization of the event will require a lot of volunteer work - for managing the registration, for distributing the T-shirts and other goodies, for informing the participants about the various details of the race events, for providing directions during the race and about the remaining distance, etc.
- Best if some school children be involved for most of the volunteer responsibilities.
- Timing the race & other technical details:
- Perhaps Runnersforlife organization can help in this, as they have the experience in organizing races before.
Objectives of the race event on Apr 13th
Main objective of the race event on Apr 13th:
- To provide an opportunity to participate in a fitness oriented event to the people living in and around JP Park
- To ensure everyone involved has fun!
- Educate everyone about the benefits of running; providing advice on best ways to exercise and run.
- Encourage the development of a running community based in JP Park.
- Build a core team for RunWalkIndia which will have the necessary experience and knowledge to organize further events, as well as facilitate others in organizing events all over the country.
With the above objectives in mind, I have the following objection to advertising about this race in the newspapers or newspaper inserts.
The event should encourage community building by fueling and encouraging the interest in fitness - specifically with running and walking. We are not trying to fool anyone into go running and participate in this event. We are not forcing anyone to participate in this event. We want to give an opportunity for people who have an interest in increasing their fitness to participate in this event.
In my view, if there is a need for putting newspaper inserts three days before the event, then the event is a failure!
So everyone: Please inform as many people as you can about this event. Send emails to them. Send SMS messages to them. Talk with them about it.
Talk about it with your neighbor, your barber, the bus conductor, the vegetable vendor, the police constable, the grocery shop owner, the regular runners / joggers / walkers in JP Park, the local politicians, the doctors and the nurses in the Sumathi Nursing home and other hospitals, your parents & family members, your school mates…..
In short, Inform EVERYONE about the race!
Doing it well now versus doing it perfectly later
The last paragraph of Seth's post is what made me refer to it here.
The minute you start walking down a path toward a yak shaving party, it's worth making a compromise. Doing it well now is much better than doing it perfectly later.
I thought it is highly applicable for me, as I am frequently postponing doing something as I think there is a better way to do it if only I do something else first, and that way constantly end up going down to the shaving-the-yak party!
I think it is also very applicable to our group as different people might pull it in different directions, and one person's tendency to go shaving-the-yak might pull the entire group in the same direction.
I was discussing with BK earlier about whether it is a good idea to postpone the event to a later date, as one feedback I got was that it would be preferable for me to be in Bangalore a month before the event, rather than during the event - in the interest of helping in the organization. BK wisely thought it is better to go ahead with the April 13th date. I agree with him. Better to do it right now, rather than hope to do it perfectly later!
I would request everyone adopt the same philosophy with posting on the blog as well : Better to post something and get the discussion rolling, rather than wait for making a perfect post with earth-shattering insights and implications.

Walking and Running at JP Park
- Everyone spread the word to their friends via e mail and SMS, encourage them to come to the location on Saturdays/ Sundays before the event so that they are familiar with the place and know a couple of people who are likely to be there for the event.
- Put up circulars at the apartment blocks etc around the area.
- See whatever way you can get low cost publicity - put out Fliers - even at cars parked around gardens and parks close to the area where walkers are then likely to see them.
- Hand out the same to walkers at each of these parks.
- Build up the enthusiasm and see if you can get a local school also involved in participating - that can build up enthusiasm significantly
Most importantly - never feel discouraged and keep at it
I am dead sure you folks will have a resounding participation
Best
Rahul
